Cox Enterprises is hiring an Innovation & Technology Lead is responsible for identifying, tracking, and evaluating nascent and leading-edge renewable energy and cleantech products and technologies. Detailed research and articulate writing skills a must. Goals will be accomplished through research and relationship building with educational research institutions, technology incubators, start-ups, established technology providers, peer networking, and connections with other companies who are leaders in sustainability. This role is responsible for analyzing, and evaluating emerging energy technologies, financial modeling, scouting start-ups, and large companies as potential partners, and identifying, proposing, and leading full-scale and pilot-scale project opportunities. The role will also assist with finding creative ways to help Cox to reduce the environmental footprint (carbon dioxide, water, and waste) of its portfolio of companies to support the corporate goal to be carbon neutral and water neutral by 2034 and zero waste to landfill by 2024.

Job Responsibilities:

Tracking Leading Edge Clean Technologies

  • Research and establish pathways to provide visibility into leading-edge and newly proven technologies that advance Cox’s sustainability goals.
  • Develop relationships with educational and research institutions, governmental agencies, clean-tech incubators, venture capital firms, start-up coalitions, established renewable technology providers, peer companies, and others to ensure visibility of cleantech implementation opportunities
  • Conduct internet research, including subscribing to various environmental technology and sustainability email lists and RSS feeds to stay abreast of relevant developments
  • Lead due diligence for self-development, acquisition, partnering, or investment in clean/renewable energy (e.g., solar, wind, fuel cells, biogas, hydrogen, landfill gas, energy storage, waste to energy, geothermal, CHP, alternative-fueled vehicles, etc.).
  • Direct “Open Innovation” projects, and support the Cox Conserves team to drive the pipeline of new opportunities and new business models through the Innovation selection funnel that includes carbon, water, and waste.
  • Manage the gathering and selection process of all inputs by internal & external resources on possible innovations along the whole value chain.
  • Conduct research and analyses of new and emerging clean energy technology, policies, financing mechanisms, and regulatory frameworks leading to the development of subject-specific white papers.
  • Create clear, concise, data-driven, and action-oriented content for internal-external reports, technical briefs, and presentations.

Performing Due Diligence and Financial Analysis

  • Carefully evaluate new technologies, including engineering soundness, cost, risk, scalability, and economic feasibility
  • Develop and run economic and engineering models of new technologies and projects
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on the technical and economic feasibility of new technologies
  • Visit project sites to evaluate the efficacy of leading-edge and cleantech projects and develop recommendations for the Cox Conserves portfolio of projects.

Overseeing Pilot and Proof of Concept projects

  • Develop project plans to evaluate the validity of renewable energy technology and other clean tech opportunities
  • Utilize Cox Conserves’ PMO process to develop renewable and cleantech pilot projects
  • Develop methodologies to conduct proof-of-concept testing for nascent technologies



  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental, Civil, or equivalent field of study) is required
  • Experience in Financial modeling
  • At least 5-8 years work experience in cleantech, renewable energy sector, and/or utilities
  • Self-motivated, pro-active, self-starter, with demonstrated creative and critical thinking capabilities
  • Demonstrated Critical thinking skills
  • Experience using spreadsheet models to evaluate the technical and economic viability of various technologies and projects
  • Articulate speaker and writer with the ability to distill complex technical ideas into accessible briefing materials for a non-technical audience and senior executives
  • Ability to think Experience in cleantech, renewables, sustainability, or energy infrastructure projects.
  • Passion for sustainability

  • Advanced degree in engineering, finance, or business
  • Prior experience in researching leading-edge cleantech
  • Innovative and proactive skills to identify and adapt to key emerging markets, renewable and waste-to-energy technologies, and design structures that capture value from projects in the Cox subsidiaries
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to speak in front of groups and executives
  • Display creativity, passion, and a desire to break new ground in a constantly shifting energy landscape
  • Ability to build solid working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience collaborating and communicating at the senior executive level
  • Experience with Global Reporting Initiative, Carbon Disclosure Project, and ESG platforms
  • Technical knowledge of electrical energy and power markets strongly preferred
