Job Title:
Licensed Practical Nurse (Pre-Op, Post-Op)


General Statement of Duties:

Provides professional nursing care for surgery center patients following established standards and practices, meeting both the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient. Is a resource person and teacher. Care given reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations. Utilizes initiative and strives to maintain a steady level of productivity. Is a self starter. Is compatible and supportive, and a team player. Communicates on behalf of the patient and reflects the mission, ethics and goals of the facility.


Supervision Received:
Reports directly to the ASC Site Lead Nurse.


Supervision Exercised:
Surgical Technicians, Medical Assistants


Typical Physical Demands:

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires ability to push and pull equipment and a gurney with a 200+ pound patient on it. Requires good visual acuity and hearing in the normal range. Ability to handle stressful situations appropriately. May need to work irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.


Typical Working Conditions:

Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a surgical environment. Work is indoors in a climate controlled environment.


Examples of General Duties:

  • Performs general nursing care to patients. Coordinates and supervises patient care. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Participates in “Right Patient, Right Procedure, Right Site” throughout patient admission.
  • Adheres to all surgery center policies, procedures and nursing care standards when providing patient care
  • Prepares equipment and aids physicians during treatment, examination and testing of patients specific to Ophthalmology. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly
  • Observes, records and reports patient’s condition and reactions to drugs and treatments to physicians. Dispenses medications, following the five (5) medication rights, as directed.
  • Oversees scheduling and identifies conflicts. Maintains timely flow of patients
  • Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs patients in collection of samples and tests
  • Responds to and refers to incoming telephone calls. Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions.
  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results.
  • Maintains surgery center for necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness. Prepares list of medical supplies needed.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees, drills as requested.
  • Participated in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Carries out medical and surgical asepsis during patient care.
  • Gives care to patients, reflecting flexibility in rules and regulations, as indicated by individual patient needs
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, knowledge of diseases/surgical conditions, care required and good judgment
  • Provides patients with explanation and verbal reassurance consistently.
  • Documents patient care in EMR
  • Organizes and manages nursing activities reflecting due consideration for patients’ needs and the needs of the facility and staff. Considers age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.
  • Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate action in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations
  • Consults with other staff as needed and as appropriate to patient needs
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to supervisors, co-workers and physicians
  • Perform related work as required.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school
  • Current registered nursing license in the state of Georgia
  • Two years nursing experience
  • Current BCLS certification
