  • Chenega Professional & Technical Services, LLC is seeking a Subject Matter Expert/Copy Editor to provide editorial management, publication operations, subject matter expertise services to support the execution of its mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Edit manuscripts for grammar, spelling, syntax, and scientific/technical/medical terminology according to the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal’s style and format requirement, which is based on leading style guides in this field.
  • Revise writing to conform to the journal’s current style and usage conventions and to improve comprehensibility.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to other technical editors and journal staff on complex terminology and taxonomy related to myriad emerging and remerging infections.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to other technical editors when needed on publishing practices and standards to ensure all editors are consistently following those practices and standards. Advises journal staff regarding issues or problems that create inefficiencies or delays in the editing and publishing cycle. Draws on previous experience in editorial management and oversight, e.g., managing editor, senior copy editor, lead technical editor.
  • Examine all components of submissions and recommends changes to authors regarding formatting, graphics, tables, data sets, figures, and appendices.
  • Submit all components of editing assignments, including manuscript, figures, tables, and appendices, according to deadlines specified by the customer production schedule for each monthly issue.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in meeting short deadlines, such as the ability to reorder assignments, work under unusual pressure, or adjust editorial standards in the face of limited time.
  • Maintains files on the customer share drive following naming and versioning conventions.
  • Rewrite and reorganize manuscripts to improve organization of ideas and comprehensive; to ensure there is a coherent public health message; and to ensure submissions comply with mandated word counts, numbers of references, and numbers of tables, figures, and other graphics.
  • Verifies consistency and accuracy of data in text, tables, graphs, and technical appendices on assigned articles and assists other technical editors with these tasks when needed.
  • Formats data tables and works with the journal’s production staff on illustrations. Recommends layout and design options to authors and staff.
  • Communicates with authors concerning alterations, corrections, affiliations, deadlines, or other questions; understands nuances of working with international researchers and scientists; exhibits understanding of complex subject matter in working with authors.
  • Proofreads typeset proofs when required; checks and evaluates work of other editors as requested.
  • Participates in regular meetings for copy editors and for the journal’s staff; leads discussions and presentations as appropriate; suggests topics for editorial meetings; provides feedback regarding meetings and discussions on editorial topics.
  • Completes other duties, such as evaluating how well editorial and production processes work, as requested by the editor-in-chief, managing editor, or copy editor team lead.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency at running eXtyles software for manuscript preparation (we train staff).

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • Bachelor’s Degree combined with a minimum of 5 years’ experience performing copy/editing,
  • Master’s Degree with 3 to 5 years of experience in the field of journalism,
  • or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • 6 years’ experience in a editorial or journalism role
  • Outstanding editing skills — both content editing and copy editing
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills
  • Reliable and independent self-starter, but with a positive and team-friendly attitude
  • Experience using project management software, eXtyles
  • Expert level proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to present strategic concepts in individual as well as group meetings

  • The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.
  • During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
  • Currently, all journal staff are teleworking, and the incumbent in this position will need to be able to telework and participate in teleconferences and calls with journal staff.
